Thursday the 1st of October is Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节 Zhōngqiū jié) in China! To celebrate the festival, families get together and enjoy eating mooncakes (月饼 yuèbǐng) and drinking tea… and they may even get to gaze at the full moon if the skies are clear enough!

Modern take on traditional deities now on display in Beijing

If you’ve been into the underpass at Beijing’s Guomao intersection (between the south-east corner under the bus station to exit C of the subway station) recently, you have probably noticed this massive mural on the wall at the western end. It’s entitled ‘The Gods go to Work’ and this explosion of colour is full of recognisable – and not so recognisable – homages to Chinese and specifically Beijing culture, both traditional and modern. But what does it all mean and why is it at Guomao? Read on to find out!

Best of Beijing – Cultural Activities in Beijing

It’s often said that early autumn is the best time to visit Beijing and see what the city has to offer. While getting out and about everywhere may not be possible at the moment, that doesn’t mean you can’t start to make plans!

To that end, for the past few weeks Cultural Keys has introduced you to the best of what the Chinese capital has to offer, from food to flowers, from classical architecture to useful words and phrases especially for Beijing!
