Chinese Knotting (中国结 Zhōngguó jié) is one of the most common folk-arts still seen in China, although most knots are now mass-produced in factories. Traditionally made of silk, they are now usually made using red paracord, since red is the most auspicious colour in China.
The date of knotting’s origin is unknown. Historians speculate that knots may have been used as a way to remember things – the contents of a jar, for example – before writing was invented.
There are many different types of knots, but the Panchang Knot (盘长结 Pán cháng jié) is considered the quintessential Chinese knot, and is particularly auspicious if made with 8 loops. This knot, also known as the infinity knot, is the one which we teach you to make during a Cultural Keys’ traditional Chinese knotting workshop.
You will also learn more about the history and culture of knotting through an English language presentation given by one of our team.

Our custom private workshops are held at our culture centre in Xiaopu Village and limited to 10 people, to ensure each attendee gets full attention from the teacher. The price includes a 1.5-hour private workshop, an English presentation on the language, history and culture of Chinese knots, snacks and Chinese tea. At the end of the workshop, you will be able to take your creations home with you.
As well as the above, we are also happy to take photos of you during your workshop, which can be sent to you to share with friends and family. If you don’t want photos or video taken, please let us know.
