Online Presentation: Clothing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties

Chinese clothing is known around the world for its beauty, but most people aren’t familiar with much more than the cheongsam and the mandarin collar, both relatively modern. There were of course many different types of garment, and what people wore usually depended on their standing in society. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, clothing was often used as a means to legitimise the reign of the emperor and as an instrument of social control.
