The Dog in Traditional Chinese Paintings

It might be the Year of the Rabbit but at Cultural Keys we’ve been inspired by our two recent rescue dogs, Teddy and Mr. Percy, to look in more detail at the dog in Chinese history, art and legend. Each month we’ll look at a different aspect of the dog in traditional Chinese culture as well as introduce you to a few special pups who need your help!

This week we’ll look at some paintings of dogs that were created over the last 2000 or so years.

A Flower In Seclusion: The Plum Blossom in Song Dynasty Poetry

Scrolling through social media, you might see pictures of cute cats. An interface between our personal and social lives, pets’ photos help us express ourselves while keeping a distance. An old trick. Just as we post pictures with cats, Song Dynasty literati (well-educated scholars and/or officials) exchanged poems about the reclusive flowering plum.

Photos from our recent Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Workshop!

Last week Cultural Keys was pleased to welcome Wen Meng Xin from China News to our culture centre! Wen Meng Xin spent the day with us learning about what we do, as well as interviewing our co-founder AJ Donnelly. We also held a free calligraphy and painting class so she could get footage of some typical events.
