Audio Storytime: Yugong Moves a Mountain

The story Yugong Moves a Mountain (愚公移山 Yúgōng Yíshān) is a classic Chinese tale of perseverance with a moral comparable to the English idiom of “where there’s a will, there’s a way!”

Read on to find out more about the story and listen to our narration!

Mount Wangwu in Henan Province

The story tells of old Yugong (which translates as Mr. Fool) trying to do the impossible – and how he eventually succeeded! The story is first mentioned in the Liezi, a Taoist text dated to the fourth century, so it is likely considerably older. The two mountains mentioned in the story are named in some versions as the Taihang and Wangwu mountains in Henan Province (approximately 800km from the Bohai Sea).

Listen to the story and judge for yourself – does the old man deserve the name Yugong (Mr Fool)?!
