Chinese Culture Events in Beijing – August 2022

Exhibition: Deng Tuo Donated Ancient Paintings Exhibition  斯文传古风——邓拓捐赠古代绘画精品展

 In 2022, which is the 110th anniversary of Mr. Deng Tuo’s birth, the National Art Museum of China selected more than 70 donations from him to showcase the cultural value and enduring charm of ancient Chinese paintings. Dig deep into the “bamboo and stone” imagery in ancient paintings, vividly showing the artistic characteristics of traditional Chinese flower and bird paintings and landscape paintings. In addition, the exhibition presents for the first time precious photos and real objects provided by the artist’s family.

Rongbaozhai is a well-known shop with a long history that sells the Four Treasures of the Study (four tools used for calligraphy and painting: paper, brushes, ink and ink stones). This year is its 350th anniversary, and to celebrate, this exhibition displays Rongbaozhai’s historical chronology, inscriptions by leaders, artists’ inscriptions, goods that were sold in the past and works of calligraphy.

Exhibition: Arms And Armour of the Qing Dynasty In the Palace Museum Collection  崇威耀德一故宫博物院藏清代武备展

This exhibition is jointly organized by the Guardian Art Center and the Palace Museum. On display are more than 150 pieces and sets of weaponry, mainly from the imperial collection of the Qing Dynasty.

Peking Opera: “Butterfly Cup”  京剧《蝴蝶杯》

Starring Chang Qiuyue and Liu Mingzhe from the Beijing Peking Opera Theatre Troupe, this opera is a Ming Dynasty love story. The titular cup is a token of love between the couple and is very special: As long as there is wine in the cup, you can see a butterfly; after drinking the wine, you can’t see the butterfly.

The Temple of Heaven features some of the most iconic architecture in Beijing. It is also one of the city’s largest public parks and a gathering place for Beijingers of all ages. Nowhere else does the city’s past and present exist so prominently side by side.  During this two-hour walk, we will explore the Temple of Heaven complex and discuss its ritual and historical significance. We will also examine the connections between past and present and how ancient forms of political legitimacy linger into the 21st century. Along the way, we will have a chance to witness the vibrant culture of one of Beijing’s largest parks. We might see dancers, musicians, martial artists, and even parents matchmaking their (often unsuspecting) grown children!

The Ten Memorials tells the story of a misunderstanding between the first emperor of the Tang Dynasty Li Yuan and his son Li Shimin, and how the official Chu Suiliang used ten memorials to resolve the misunderstanding. The play praises the loyalty of officials who dare to tell the truth.

Hear the incredible story of the summer of 1900, when 4,000 foreigners and Chinese lived under siege from radical mystic rebels for 55 days. Follow us into the old Legation Quarter to hear stories about the bombing of the French embassy, the wavering Qing Court and how 200,000 bullets flew into the sky without finding a single target. The walk ends at our hutong gallery for a small exhibition curated by Beijing Postcards of original photos and maps from the early 1900’s.
