Painting Activities

Beijing Opera Masks (38RMB or just 28RMB if you book in advance): Choose from two paper masks: Jiang Wei (姜维; 202-264) a controversial military general during the Three Kingdoms Period or the Monkey King (孙悟空), a legendary figure who is one of the main characters in Chinese novel Journey to the West (西游记), written in the 16th century. Both of these characters are featured in numerous stories and operas, and continue to appear in TV shows, films and video games.

Round Fans (48RMB or just 38RMB if you book in advance): Fans have been made in China since the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046BC). They were initially made of feathers (羽毛 yǔmáo) so the modern word for fan (扇 shàn) contains the character for feather! By the Han Dynasty (202AD-220BC) they were made of silk on a wooden or bamboo frame. There were many different shapes and they were decorated with paintings, embroidery and tassels. Choose from three different designs: a lotus, a dragon boat or cranes, a symbol of longevity in China.

Rabbit Lords (58RMB or just 48RMB if you book in advance): According to legend, several hundred years ago there was a terrible epidemic in Beijing. The Moon Goddess sent her rabbit to cure the disease, but the rabbit was white (the colour of death in China) and no one would let him in to help. So he borrowed clothes from the statues in a nearby temple. People then let him in and he was able to stop the epidemic. He is still worshipped by some Beijingers today! Choose from a plate or a figurine.

All materials are provided. Come by our stall and paint any time!

Making dough figurines of the Monkey King

The Monkey King (Sun Wukong 孙悟空) is a legendary figure who is one of the main characters in Chinese novel Journey to the West (西游记), written in the 16th century. In this one hour workshop, you’ll learn how to make a figurine of the Monkey King on a stick. These were traditionally made of glutinous rice dough and put on a stick for display and for children to play with. The workshop is taught by an expert folk artist. 100RMB or just 88RMB if you book in advance. Workshops at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.
