Sugar Rosettes (糖环 táng huán ) are one of the most famous handmade snacks in the south of China.
Read on to find out more about this delicious food!
Sugar Rosettes have a long history
They originated in the Western Zhou Dynasty (1045 BC – 771 BC) and became popular in the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
The shape has meaning
The overall round shape and the holes in the rosette symbolise reproduction, so they are a symbol of family continuity.
They have simple, easy to find ingredients
They are simply made of glutinous rice flour, sugar and water. Dough is rolled into a long strip and shaped into a flower. The rosettes are then deep fried.
They are found in two provinces
These are a famous snack in the ‘two Guangs’ – Guangxi and Guangdong.
Making them really well isn’t so easy
In ancient times, making sugar rosettes was a way for mothers-in-law to test their daughter-in-law’s character and whether they would take care of the household!
