Watching quyi performances while drinking tea was a common way to pass the time in old Beijing. As the only professional group of folk music artists in Beijing, the Beijing Quyi Troupe is committed to the inheritance and development of this folk art. Beijing Quyi Troupe and Lao She Tea House have cooperated to put on these music special performances and present audiences with a rich variety of authentic and original drum music.

This exhibition presents 80 paintings of the Changzhou school from the collections of the National Art Museum of China and the Nanjing Museum. Founded by Yun Nantian, paintings from this oeuvre are characterised by their delicacy and vibrancy. 

A Story of Gardens III——The Cultural and Art of Happiness and Longevity

The items in this exhibition span more than four thousand years, from the Neolithic to the Republic of China. The exhibits include Neolithic colored pottery, Western Zhou bronzes, Han Dynasty tiles, Tang Dynasty bronze mirrors, Song Dynasty porcelain, and Ming and Qing Dynasty furniture, utensils, calligraphy and paintings. The exhibits reflect the simple aesthetics, spiritual pursuit and aspirations for a better life of the Chinese people since ancient times.

Older than Peking Opera itself, Tianleyuan Theatre is a must-see location for anyone interested in Beijing culture. The theatre is now given over to the Peking Opera Experience, which combines performance, exhibits, high-tech audio visuals and behind-the-scenes glimpses at the rich history and culture of the performance art.

Probably the most famous Chinese opera outside of China due to the 1993 movie of the same name, Farewell my Concubine is the opera performed by the characters in the movie. It tells the story of the defeat of King Xiang Yu, and the loyalty shown to him despite his defeat by his wife Consort Yu.  

Beijing Opera: The Lucky Purse《锁麟囊》

Written in 1940 by playwright Weng Ouhong, this heartwarming opera made the female impersonator Cheng Yanqiu a huge star in the 1940s. The story tells of an act of kindness between two women, previously strangers and each on the way to her wedding, that turned them into lifelong friends.
